Although we never realize it in the moment, there will always be a time when we say "goodbye," to our friends, family, or loved ones, it might be our last goodbye. Sometimes we might be fortunate enough to have the chance to reconnect. Other times we don't get so lucky. This collection features four short stories that revolve around this concept in different ways. Before We Depart: Sharing the title of this collection, the story recounts a young man trying to reconnect with his best friend from high school. Flashbacks of the last time they hung out offer a possible explanation as to why they fell out of touch. Dana's Letter: During the American Civil War, Dana is informed that her brother, a Union soldier, faces the death penalty for treason. Since a guilty verdict seems almost certain, he writes a final letter to each member of the family. In Dana's, he explains the events that led to his trial while also saying goodbye. A Family's Dog: Eight-year-old twins, Mitchel and Meghan, are doing their best to cope with the recent passing of their beloved dog, Banjo. One day at the neighborhood park, they swear they see a dog that looks just like Banjo. Is it just wishful thinking, or has their dear friend actually returned? Bungee Cord: Charlotte, although everyone but her mom calls her Charlie, returns to her hometown in South Carolina for a short weekend to attend her little brother's high school graduation. Despite what should be a joyous occasion, she must navigate the turbulent relationships she has with her emotionally distant father, her older brother recovering from addiction, and her overbearing, callous mother. The bonds that hold the family together are put to the test as tensions rise.
