Gec Osmanli payitahtinda marjinalite, mesru ile gayrimesrunun tam siniri üzerinde konumlanma haline isaret eder. Bir toplumsal grup, pratik veya mekan icin marjinal olmak, varligi ne bütün olarak kabul edilebilir ne de bütünüyle reddedilebilir olmak demek. Bekarlar, hem kentin ihtiyac duydugu isgücünün önemli kesimini saglayan bir grup olusturuyor hem de aile denetiminden yoksun tekil kisiler olarak nitelenip mahalle odakli yasama tehdit olarak algilaniyorlardi. Meyhane de böyle bir mekan, cünkü icki kullanimi uzun zaman boyunca sadece gayrimüslimler icin olagan sayilan, en azindan resmen böyle ifade edilen bir pratik. Oysa Müslümanlarin da bir kesimi, hemen her dönemde icki icmekteydi. Kitap, gec Osmanli Istanbulunun söz konusu iki yari, gizli ama cok olagan marjinal olgusunu aydinlatmayi deniyor. Hep sorun olarak tanimlanmis, asagilanmis, ancak onlarsiz olunamayan bir dizi gercekligin tarihsel izlerini sürüyor. Published as part of the Istanbul Studies Series of Istanbul Research Institute, Bachelor Rooms and Taverns focuses on the concept of marginality and space in Ottoman Istanbul from 1789 to 1839. In the late Ottoman capital, marginality designates the state of being on the precise border between the legitimate and the illicit. For a social group, practice, or space, marginality means neither being entirely embraced, nor being entirely dismissible. Bachelors represented a group that constituted a significant majority of the workforce the city needs and were simultaneously categorized as individuals lacking family supervision and thus were perceived as a threat to the neighborhood-oriented style of living. The tavern was a similar kind of space, for alcohol consumption was, for long years, a practice regarded common to non-Muslims, or, at least, officially articulated as such. Yet, a portion of the Muslim population consumed alcohol in almost every period of the Empire. This book strives to shed light upon the two semi-secret, yet perfectly ordinary marginal concepts of the late-Ottoman Istanbul. In doing so, the book traces the historic steps of a series of indispensible realities that have long been belittled and characterized as problematical.
