He attended St. Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace and is a graduate of the National Institute for the Dramatic Arts (NIDA). He has two younger brothers, Josh Lawson, an actor, best known for his appearances on Thank God You're Here; and Jordan Lawson, bass player in the Brisbane band, The Gallant.
