McMinn played in the losing County Antrim Shield Final of 1981/82 and got the only winners medal of his Distillery F.C. career in the CAS of 1985/86, helping the Whites to defeat Ballymena United 3-1. In March, 1988, he became player-manager, but later resigned in September, 1988, after a disagreement with the Chairman. McMinn moved on to play for (and later manage) Ards F.C. He returned to Lisburn once more, in December, 1990, and finished his 15-season Distillery career with 524 appearances and 105 goals. McMinn also played for Glenavon F.C., Dungannon Swifts F.C. and Moyola Park F.C.. A Northern Ireland Youth International, he was capped once for the Irish League in 1980/81.
