This book presents an essential overview of beta-lactams and their medicinal value and use in the preparation of other biologically active compounds. Written by internationally respected authors, the individual chapters explore beta-lactams' synthesis, their mechanism of formation, biological effects, and function as base materials for other heterocycles of major importance.

Prof. Bimal Banik is the author of more than 263 publications, patents, books, book chapters, reviews and editorials that explore organic, medical and biomedical science of anticancer drugs and antibiotics. He has approximately 450 abstract presentations and more than 5000 citations in national and international journals and more than 130 media exposures (TV, national and international newspapers and internet). As a Principal Investigator, his laboratory-based research has been funded through multi-million dollar grants (4.40 million dollars) by National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute, Private Foundations and Universities. He has been the Co-Principal Investigator of 0.5 million dollar research grants. He has also generated 1.87 million dollars in instrumentation grants. Several of his publications have become top cited, most cited and the most down loaded in their category. Prof. Banik is currently Vice President of Research & Education Development at Community Health Systems of South Texas, USA. Additionally, Prof. Banik is the Section Editor as well as the Founding Editor of the 'Organic and Medicinal Chemistry' section of Chemistry Central Journal. Dr. Banik is the Editor-in-Chief of five other international journals
