The single was released in the UK as a digital download on 9 March 2008, with a physical release on the following day, in aid of Sport Relief. The song was remixed with an extended piano instrumental before the beat came in for the single release. "Better in Time" was BBC Radio 2's record of the week from 11 February 2008. "Better in time"/"Footprints in the Sand" is the 313th best selling single of the21st century selling 251205 units. It has so far become a top ten hit in Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Lewis's native UK, its sold enough copies to be certified Silver.
