Violence against women is a problem of vast magnitude. Understanding the origins of this oppression is essential to fighting it and changing established power structures. If we consider the technological advances experienced by 21st century society through social networks, we can see that these networks are a powerful tool for organising. An example of this is cyber-activism, which is proving to be a safe and widely used strategy by current social movements, both because of its viability and ease of access, and because of the power of the internet, especially social networks. Within the virtual space, women have found a safe place to share their experiences, report cases of violence, discuss gender issues and demand change. In this context, the feminist movement, through digital activism, has used social networks as tools for mobilisation, awareness-raising and action, promoting real changes in the global violence scenario, as this book aims to demonstrate.
