A distinguished Chicago journalist, Taylor was the military correspondent for the Chicago Evening Journal during the Civil War years and was well known for his firsthand accounts of Sherman's marches through the South. After the war he became a freelance writer, authoring several books including this colorful first-person account of his journey from Chicago to San Francisco.
