At the age of sixteen, Mayer Hersh began an impossible eighteen months at Auschwitz. It was the fourth of nine Nazi labor camps that devoured his innocence. By the end of what was possibly the longest survival of these nightmarish compounds, he would survive a total of five years and two months in camps before his liberation in 1945. After having witnessed countless atrocities and losing one hundred immediate and extended family members, Hersh relays his story without bitterness or hatred. He recounts his experiences during and after the war, leading up to his confrontation of the past-a trip to Auschwitz in 2002 that inspired him to tell his story at last.
