The setting for this story is the Korean War and the French war in Vietnam. It is the story of a Navy pilot as he faces the day-to-day dangers of aerial and ground support combat. It exposes the restrictions imposed on our pilots in Korea and the viciousness of the battle being fought by the French in Vietnam. You will know what these men felt as they faced combat and realized the certainty that they may not survive. You will feel as they did as they lament the loss of a friend or face the stark reality that they may not return from a mission. Further more, you will also see a glimpse of the softer side of a pilot's life as he falls in love and learns that love is hope, and hope can keep you alive. I was a Navy pilot and flew the planes the pilot flies in this book. I felt the pain of losing many friends and survived six accidents, some minor and a couple quite serious, such as the injuries I received when I crashed in a TT-1 jet. I was denied combat, not by choice, but by the timing of the seven-plus years I spent in the Navy. I will always regret that I was not there to help my buddies as they faced battles in the months and years after my release from active duty. My last three years were spent in the training command. I was a staff instructor in the instructor's school. The pilots in my position were chosen from the top pilots in the training command. I was told by a Yeoman (Record keeper) that I had the highest flight grade he had ever seen achieved in the time he had been there. Prior to leaving the Navy, I was given an opportunity to join the Blue Angels, but declined because I felt the pull to start a life somewhere else. When I had requested a transfer to the Regular Navy, so I could make the Navy my career, my request was denied. Perhaps because four and a half months of my last fifteen months in the service were spent grounded due to injuries. Later, my commanding officer called me in and told me that he would guarantee my acceptance to the Regular Navy if I made another request. I said no since I was not sure of what the future would hold since I had been denied that earlier. I will always regret that decision.
