All of U.S literature is multicultural, multiethnic and multiracial. One gets to know about diverse cultural identities, and different races having quite different ethnic backgrounds. In order to understand these multicultural writings one has to keep in mind the multiplicity of different racial and ethnic identities. Multiculturalism is a term which came into usage after the idea of a melting pot was criticized by minorities as both assimilationist and white dominated. It is only through multicultural approach that one becomes able to examine the diversity and complexity of the American literary landscape. One is able to look at the intersections between history and literature, the formation of mixed and hybrid identities, the effects of slavery and migration on the American literary imagination, and the capacity of writers to tell the stories of their ancestors in a written language. This book aims to study the multicultural aspect of American literature through the novels of Bharati Mukherjee by analyzing the female protagonists and their identity formation and transformation as a result of immigration.
