Each woman will begin to understand that they have an empowering name, which in turn allows them to see themselves as the jewels they were created to be.Being a community and civic minded person as well, Betty is one of the founding members of a Tacoma, Washington grass-roots political organization called Citizens for 21st Century Leadership. (C21CL) The platform for this group is education, health care, jobs & the economy, and voter participation. Citizens for 21st Century Leadership held town meetings and other forums within the community to discuss the issues impacting them, and educate citizens about the voting and legislative process.Betty is multi-faceted. She spent time as a columnist for a community newspaper; The Tacoma Facts. It was the Arts & Entertainment Column (This Night Out with Betty Slater) Her tag line was "If an event has anything to do with art or entertainment, more than likely I'll see you out." When she discovered her poetic talent Betty created and hosted a Poetry/Talent event; The Message Café which provided a venue for talented people of all ages to share their poetic gift. Betty has shared her poems from Seattle to Memphis, and in Southern California.Betty spent time in Southern California, where she participated in the Advanced Scene Study acting workshops, and in the playwright program at the Robey Theater Company of Los Angeles. Robey was founded by Danny Glover and Artistic Director Ben Guillory, her mentor.Betty co-directed and acted in a spot touring gospel play called Midnight Cry where she had the opportunity to perform at the world famous Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York.Betty enjoys helping others reach their goals too. She volunteered for five years at an Entertainment Conference called The Merge Summit, Los Angeles. This event brought together the entertainment industry and the faith-based community for three days of master classes, workshops, and panels. Up and coming entertainment professionals of faith networked with producers, directors, and A-list actors.Betty's ultimate goal when sharing her gifts is to have fun, make sure others are having fun, share information in a memorable way, and help individuals break free from the chains of fear, and other limiting beliefs that may be stopping them from being as successful as they desire to be.
