The merging of polymeric technology with nanotechnology has brought about a new dimension in the field of drug delivery, food preservation, packaging, tissue engineering, nano-implants and biomedical engineering along with bringing together chemists, biologists, physicians and engineers in a collaborative manner. The nonspecific distribution and toxicity of previously identified small drugs molecules and the short half-lives of many of these modern therapeutics has been a major driving force for the development of polymeric drug delivery platforms. The successful clinical translation of the earlier macro- and micro-drug-delivery systems has led to the evolution of controlled-release nanodrug delivery platforms that are capable of overcoming pharmacological limitations with substantial advantages over conventional dosage forms. Application of nanotechnology in drug delivery system has opened up new areas of research in prolonged release of drugs in order to reduce the side effectsof administration of conventional dosage form especially for the treatment of diabetes mellitus.
