Air pollution is the introduction of substances that cause harm or discomfort to humans or other living organisms, or damages the natural environment into the atmosphere. How to control air pollution? Many technologies have been applied all around the world. Many of them have high costs and generate secondary pollutants. Throughout the book the author presents the results obtained utilizing an emerging technology to remove toxic compounds (hydrogen sulfide) from air emissions: biofilter. Biofiltration is a process that uses microorganisms immobilized on a porous fixed bed. The contaminated gas flow passes through the filter bed, which in turn absorbs the biodegradable pollutants, so that in a last step, the microorganisms convert it to less polluting compounds. In general, biofilters are easy to install, can be operated continuously and do not require much maintenance. For these reasons, they have been deeply studied and improved all around the world.
