Manipur is one of the hill-gird of North-Eastern states of the Indian Union. It is predominantly a hilly region but in its central part, therein lies a small plain of alluvial filling. It is bounded on the East by upper Myanmar, on the South by Chin Hills of Myanmar and Mizoram, on the West by Cachar district of Assam and on the North by Nagaland. Manipur occupies a small tract of land in the extreme North-Eastern part of India and it lies between 23"50' N & 25"41" N latitudes and 93"2' E and 94"47' E longitudes. Being a hilly region, Manipur is at an elevation varying from 730 - 3000 meters above mean sea level. The state covers a total area of 22,356 sq. km. of which nearly 15,154 sq. km. area constitutes of forest, the vegetation being typical of tropical and sub-tropical forests.
