Kathleen Ellis grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, received her B.A. from University of California, Berkeley and M.A. from University of Maine, Orono. The author of Red Horses and three chapbooks of poetry, she has also translated poems by Latin American women, and co-edited The Eloquent Edge: 15 Maine Women Writers. She is the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Maine Arts Commission, residencies from Yaddo and Djerassi, and the Pablo Neruda Poetry Prize from Nimrod. Poems from her manuscript, Dear Darwin, were set to music and released as a Parma Recordings CD, which was nominated for a 2015 Grammy Award. Ellis teaches poetry at the University of Maine, coordinates the annual POETS/SPEAK! event in Bangor, and lives in Orono on the ancestral lands of the Penobscot peoples.
