One of the most significant developments in the field of orthodontics over the past 60 years has been the successful bonding of brackets to teeth. The development of adhesives which will successfully bond orthodontic attachments directly to enamel has been greatly influenced by the research work directed towards improving adhesive properties of materials used in conservative dentistry. The foundation of this procedure was laid by Buonocore in 1955 who etched enamel surface using phosphoric acid and thus made possible the bonding of brackets to tooth surface.Surpassing of the use of bands has resulted in an improved oral environment, reduced gingival inflammation and definitive improvement in esthetics as well.
