Fergus was ambushed, shot, robbed, and left for dead. Morgan and her son nursed him back to health. Fergus recovers his and Morgan's gold, they run into the Idaho wilderness, and establish Bonner's Den. The remainder of the book focuses on their struggle to survive and thrive in a hostile environment.

Garry Smith and his wife Charlotte have lived in Starkville, Mississippi for over forty years. They have been married for over fifty years. They have two sons, two grandsons, and two granddaughters. Garry was raised on a farm and worked many other jobs, including each summer for five years on offshore oil platforms. His adult life was mainly spent teaching management at the university level. He co-authored many textbooks and novels with Danny.
