The second novel in the Rolly Waters mystery series. When nesting grounds at the Border Field Park bird preserve are torn to shambles by eco-vandals, Rolly Waters is hired to follow the tracks left behind. Feeling less than optimistic about nabbing the perpetrators, he begins his due diligence, crossing paths with a local border vigilante, a tormented vaquero, and an aging rock groupie. A menacing house call from a scalpel-wielding orderly in pursuit of a prostitute named after an 80's pop hit confounds Rolly's case even further. When police detective Bonnie Hammond hands him a coroner's report, he knows it's turned deadly. This rollicking Southern California crime novel merges old-school detective story-telling with contemporary issues of immigration, political extremism, and the idiosyncrasies of playing the blues. A cozy hero living in a noir world, Rolly Waters struggles with his identity as a former musician as he attempts to recover from his rock and roll past. A colorful cast of local characters fleshes out this engaging mystery, which takes Rolly and the reader on a fast-paced ride through a dangerous underworld of record company intrigues, video games, international sex trafficking, and murder.
Autorenporträt
"A powerful new voice on the crime-fiction scene" (ForeWord Reviews), Corey Lynn Fayman has made a career of avoiding the sunlight in his hometown of San Diego, California, where he's done hard time as a keyboard player for local bands, a sound designer for the world-famous Old Globe Theatre, and an interactive designer for organizations both corporate and sundry. Armed with a B.A. in Creative Writing from UCLA and an M.A. in Educational Technology from SDSU, he's also taught technology and design courses at various colleges and universities in Southern California. Fayman's adventures working for the infamous Internet startup MP3.com led him to conceive the character of Rolly Waters, the guitar-playing detective first featured in the San Diego Book Awards nominated mystery, Black's Beach Shuffle. Unduly encouraged by this early success, he set about writing a second Rolly Waters Mystery, Border Field Blues, winner of the Genre Award at the 2013 Hollywood Book Festival. Desert City Diva, the third novel in the series, was a bronze award winner in Foreword Reviews 2015 Indiefab Book of the Year Awards. The latest in the series, Ballast Point Breakdown, was published by Konstellation Press in March 2020.
