Growing up in the 1940s and 1950s meant attending a four-room elementary school with a view of the Gapthe confluence of the Potomac and the Shenandoah rivers flowing between the Blue Ridge Mountains. His elementary school teachers were strong-willed and dedicated mentors. Whatever the event, from spelling bees to math competitions, students were prepared. He hit his stride in high school, and hed attend Colorado University-Boulderas the first person in Jefferson County history to go to a major school on a football scholarship, according to the Spirit of Jefferson Advocate, the local county paper. He spent most of the 1960s in the Air Force, and while on his first leave after basic training, he married a schoolteacher hed met while working at a country club as a bartender, and two years later, they had a son. Willis, however, would not stay in the Air Force forever, and he reveals all his adventures in business and in life in Boundary Street to Broadway Avenue.
