Since Britain joined the European Community in 1973, its relationship with its EC partners has been the subject of heated debate. Bringing together contributions from the eight men who have held the post of British Permanent Representative to the EC/EU, this book provides a unique and authoritative insight into the way this relationship has developed. Charged with representing Britain in negotiations in the Council of Ministers, and with acting as a conduit for information both from London and from Brussels, these men have enjoyed a privileged view of the reality of Britain's relationship with its EU partners. They now present a fascinating insight into the changing nature not only of Britain and the British debate about European integration, but also of an ever larger and more complicated EU.

Rezensionen
"The UK Permanent Representatives have managed the nuances andneuroses of Britain's membership of the European Union for 30years. Their reflections are - naturally - not kick andtell. But they are a unique and illuminating record of howeffective engagement has been sustained despite headlines, handbags, empty chairs and other dramas." Neil Kinnock, VicePresident, European Commission

"This book contains invaluable insights into Britain'sexistential struggle to come to terms with its membership of theEuropean Union. What better witnesses could we have than those whohave played a role somewhere between diplomacy and psychotherapy asBritain's Ambassadors to the European Union?" Chris Patten,European Commissioner

"Quite interesting and illuminating...the introduction andconclusion by Anand Menon tie in the themes of the contributorswell and the editor has done well to bring these people together."Australian Journal of Political Science
