Brooklyn Bred is an autobiography of author Dr. David Garrahan's life from ages two to twenty-one. Born into a dysfunctional family with a mentally unstable mother and absentee alcoholic father, Garrahan was homeless in Brooklyn at age six-sleeping in churches and stealing food to survive. After his mother attempted to kill him, she was sent to a hospital for the criminally insane for nine years. Garrahan lived on a farm for five years and graduated from high school, but afterwards, was again homeless. He ultimately found work at a yacht club, and graduated from college as a math and science teacher. Garrahan has since completed graduate study at seven universities and earned a Master's degree from Lehigh University and a doctorate in psychology at Columbia University, where he became a professor. Not only has Dr. Garrahan conducted much research and has written many journal articles as well as three books, but Dr. Garrahan has also been honored in the White House twice, as well as being the recipient of numerous awards. Dr. David Garrahan's history is nothing short of inspiring in his latest book, Brooklyn Bred.
