Brucellosis is one of the major zoonotic diseases caused by the bacterial genus Brucella. Brucella can be transmitted directly or indirectly from animals to humans as ingestion of contaminated food commodities, direct contact with an infected animal tissues, or inhalation of contaminated aerosols. Brucella may be shed in different body fluids like urine, milk and placental fluid. It affects people of all age groups and of both sexes. Brucellosis is an old disease that has been known by various names, including "Mediterranean fever", "Malta fever", "gastric remittent fever", and "undulant fever". Brucella organisms are small aerobic intracellular cocco-bacilli, localize mainly in the reproductive organs of host animals leading to abortions and sterility. Although human is an accidental host, brucellosis is still to be a major public health problem worldwide as the most common zoonotic infection. Although there has been huge progress in controlling brucellosis in different countries, there still remain areas with persistent infection in domestic animals and consequently transmission to the human population mostly occurs.
