The national drop-out rate in South African Higher Education (HE) is escalating despite the current government's attempts to address the crippling aftermath of Apartheid's educational inequalities. Sadly, most of the strategies implemented still remain unexamined. To this end, this book reviews one such strategy known as the Extended Curriculum Programme (ECP). The research is used to critically unpack curricular focus areas and frameworks of a design-based ECP. In order to establish the roots of learner under preparedness within South African HE, the book provides a broad socio-historical context as well as the relevant educational background. It then guides the reader into the more specialized field of design HE in South Africa. A Case study approach is employed to provide a critical view of the respective design ECP. Furthermore, the case study discusses and analyzes comparable approaches of two Scottish institutions. The book ends with closing recommendations that suggest a basic outline towards an improved programme derived from comparable strategies used at the Scottish institutions. This book is an essential read for all art and design educational practitioners.
