The authors provide insights to policymakers, community leaders, students and researchers working on climate change adaptation and resilience-building practices and strategies in vulnerable communities, including small island developing states and post-conflict states, focusing on innovative management practices and institutional capacity building. The cases presented here provide insights into how institutions can strengthen local, national, and regional capacities to adapt to climate change and other calamities.
Autorenporträt
Dr Andrew Simmons is an environmental activist from St Vincent and the Grenadines, possessing over 40 years of experience working at community through to international levels with governments, NGOs and international development organisations such as the UNDP and the Norwegian Refugee Service. As Deputy and Acting Director of the Youth Affairs Division at the Commonwealth Secretariat, he was responsible for defining the strategic direction of the Organisation in 53 countries. He holds a PhD in Sustainable Development, specialising in youth development and climate change, and its outcomes were published by Springer Nature in 2021. Dr Simmons received numerous global recognitions and awards for his achievements in the field, including the UN Global 500 Award (1989), the Goldman Environmental Prize (1994) and special recognition from the UN for his work in building the resilience of communities to deal with climate change (2015).  Andree-Ann Simmons has akeen interest in strategy and science within global healthcare and international development. She has supported the development, implementation, and fulfilment of international development projects alongside Dr Andrew Simmons for the UNDP, World Bank and Commonwealth Secretariat, among others, with a particular focus on data analysis and project evaluation. Ms Simmons holds an MSc in Applied Biosciences and Biotechnology from Imperial College London with a focus on active immunity, and a BSc in Biology. She is particularly interested in science communication and the interplay between wellness, environment and education. Currently, Ms Simmons advises and supports the development and rollout of global commercial and education programs for pharmaceutical clients as a Medical Writer, ensuring projects align with the strategic visions of the company and the betterment of patients.
