The Learning Community Concept for Port Augusta was identified through the Port Augusta Social Vision and Action Plan in June 2000. The Social Vision and Action Plan involved community consultation with over 300 people, with the aim of achieving a vision for improving Port Augusta's Social Wellbeing through eight identified goals. The goal with the highest priority was, 'education and training to suit community needs' as this has the ability to positively impact on the social capital of the community. To achieve this desired vision a partnership was formed between the community, service providers, businesses and all levels of government. This book provides an account of the development of the learning community and efforts in ensuring its survival beyond the initial concept. The study has been based on holistic learning community development and what a community can achieve through doing things themselves.
