Amanda, an ER nurse, and Mathew, a sculptor, married for ten years, are tired of the big city and ready for the simpler ways of small town living. On a trip through Sedona, Arizona, they stop to check out an abandoned, run down, fifty-year-old house located in a remote, hidden valley that had caught Mathew's imagination while searching for houses online. While exploring the house, Mathew discovers a manuscript in a hidden compartment of a hand carved desk - mysteriously the only piece of furniture in the house. Intrigued by the cover sheet - a picture of a small butterfly with the handwritten words, "1986 - A FEW DAYS BEFORE MY DEATH," Mathew and Amanda settle down on the dusty floor, lean back against the wall, and begin to read. The manuscript tells of the romance between Scott Montgomery - the property's former owner - and Susan Cambell, who first met in 1944 at the age of eight. Mathew and Amanda discover that the manuscript is but the first of several parts hidden throughout Sedona. Clues from the previous installment lead to the next. While purchasing and settling into their Sedona home, Mathew and Amanda work their way through the clues uncovering the mysterious wonders lying just below the beauty of the red rock canyons. With the discovery of each new portion of the story, Mathew and Amanda learn of Scott's and Susan's growing relationship and in the process Amanda and Mathew reaffirm their own love.
