This paper investigates the mechanical properties for welded joints of cold rolled graded stainless steel sheets like AISI 409 M and AISI 304 in the construction of railway coaches using BSW (Butt Seam Welding) process with three different process parameters like current, travel speed, welding pressure keeping heat time and off time cycle as constant. The performance of the welded joints for both the steels is identified with Tensile, Micro hardness, Bending tests and Micro and Macro structure examination. The better strength of welding is obtained with the specific current of 10.25 K.amps and travel speed 1 m/min of BSW welding process. From the observations the SS AISI 409 M have the good strength than SS AISI 304 with this process. The result obtained, provides the alternative process to the TIG and MIG welding that has been using still.
