Plasma C- reactive protein is the classical acute phase protein, which increases thousand fold in response to infection, ischaemia, trauma, burns and inflammatory conditions and has been studied as a screening device for inflammation, a marker for disease activity, and as a diagnostic adjunct. Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory bacterial infection, which involves the local destruction of periodontal tissues triggered by periodontal pathogens and could cause increased hepatic synthesis of C- reactive proteins. The purpose of this study was to examine the co-relation of periodontal diseases and levels of C- reactive proteins in blood serum. Subjects were divided into three groups - normal patients, with gingivitis and periodontitis. Estimation of level of C-reactive proteins in the serum was done and statistically analyzed.
