In vitro culture of plant cells and tissues has attracted considerable interest over recent years because it provides a means to study plant physiological and genetic processes and offers a potential to improve cultivars by increasing genetic variability and are considered to be an important complement to classical plant breeding methods. Tissue culture techniques provide unique possibilities for overcoming the barriers of interspecific cross, asexual gene introgression; it also offers creation of variation through callus induction and plantlet regeneration which provide useful germplasm for plant breeding programs. However implementing a selection system requires effective techniques to initiate and maintain the callus and subsequently regenerates plants from it, also heritability of the variations induced from such system is necessary to document their utility.
