Aiming to contribute to the investigation of the effects of globalisation in humanitarian organisations, this paper examines the leadership role played by governing boards in assuring accountability of these organisations. After reviewing the existing literature in the area of board roles and responsibilities, accountability of NGOs and globalisation of humanitarian organisations, the paper focuses on a case study of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) that is the humanitarian global organisation par excellence having presence in 190 countries or 97% of UN member nations. In conclusion, the paper explores the challenges faced by the Governing Board of IFRC in keeping the organisation accountable vis-à-vis stakeholders as a result of globalisation. This review identifies some measures taken by the IFRC in addressing these challenges and some of the coping mechanisms adopted by the Governing Board.
