The Mexican government launched a purposeful and ambitious strategy to turn Cancun into a tourism hotspot. The Bank of Mexico carried out research to find the best locations for the growth of tourism in the late 1960s as Mexico looked for methods to strengthen its economy. Cancun was chosen as a top site for a proposed resort because of its unspoiled beaches and closeness to Mayan archaeological sites. This was a component of a larger plan to emulate Acapulco's popularity as a global travel destination.
