The film is an adaptation of the 1945 best-selling novel Captain From Castile, by Samuel Shellabarger. The film''s story covers the first half of the historical epic, describing the protagonist''s persecution at the hands of the Spanish Inquisiton and his escape to the New World to join Hernán Cortés in an expeditionto conquer Mexico.
