When the sinister Bram Fitzwilliam enters the picture to assist the Guard, Emma is in more danger than ever. Before she finds what she's looking for, Emma must find a strength and courage she never knew she had. Her journey will teach her that dreams don't always come true the way you want them to, that people aren't always what they seem, and that real families can be chosen.

Jennifer L. Gadd is a life-long reader and writer who holds a deep interest in writing books that children and young adults will want to read with joy. She writes mostly fantasy and science fiction, as well as hi-lo books for struggling readers. She has lived in Texas, Illinois, and Alaska, and currently resides in Kansas City, Kansas, where she is a reading interventionist at an urban middle school. She is a proud NEA member and tends to get a little testy about threats to public education. She remains firmly convinced that The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is the best novel ever written by a human being (who may have actually been Zelda F., if we're being honest.) She owns at least one copy of every Agatha Christie book published, and she is currently rereading all of them, in order of publication. She's up to 1937 and Appointment with Death. She lives in KCK, a proud Dotte, with her husband of umpty years, what with the kids all grown up and on their own now, and a recently acquired Chihuahua of dubious age and breath.
