Simulation has been widely used in construction industry to optimize productivity and resource allocation. Nevertheless, simulation research that investigates possible spatial constraints in an explicit way is still limited. Accordingly, finding possible solutions to spatial conflicts is not integrated in construction simulation. This research proposes a cell-based modeling approach which enables explicit representation of construction worksite. It helps the decision-makers to consider spatial constraints during construction, to perform effective evaluation of site layouts, to identify and resolve spatial constraints, and then to optimize construction resources. Two case studies are presented to illustrate the applications of the proposed method. The simulation results of the cell-based modeling approach and those of MicroCYCLONE are compared to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach and its advantages.
