This paper aims to emphasize the importance of communication between patients and nursing staff in the emergency department. The adult emergency department is characterized by high physical demands, a stressful environment and psychological strain. Approximately 932 people (as of 2021) are cared for in emergency departments in Austria every day. This stressful environment is not only a great challenge for the nursing staff, but also for the patients who are brought to the emergency department due to acute situations. In such situations, effective communication between patients and nursing staff is essential. However, the same problem of ineffective communication arises time and again due to the demanding environment. Open, honest and emphatic communication between caregivers and patients is important.
