It introduces students to a wide range of unsimplified literary texts, including short stories, poems, and extracts from longer works. They are designed to be read for pleasure, for discussion, and for language improvement. The book helps students to analyse texts, and gives them the stimulus to explore the meanings and ideas behind what they read. Each of the ten chapters is based around a central theme, such as Money or Identity. Four to six main texts illustrate the theme, together with pictures and quotations. Each chapter includes a variety of language exercises, vocabulary work, and topics for discussion. Teacher's notes and brief autobiographical details about the authors are provided at the back of the book. Most of the texts are recorded on the accompanying Cassette.
