Atheroma is a term given to describe the lesion of atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a pathological process that results in narrowing and occlusions in different arteries such as the aorta, coronaries, cerebral and peripheral blood vessels. Atheromatous plaques are related to the development of myocardial infarctions and strokes which are among the leading cause of death worldwide. The pathogenesis of atherosclerosis is complex and involves fatty deposition in the walls of arteries 6 resulting in a significant degree of vessel narrowing.
