Markus Schmidt's study provides an important contribution to research into the ecclesiastical, devotional and biographical history of the Church of Saxony during the 20th century: the popular mission circle (Volksmissionskreis) spearheaded Saxony's charismatic movement within the GDR and played a crucial role in its dissemination within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saxony. Both the concept of spirituality and the understanding of spiritual welfare within this circle continue to characterise today's Church of Saxony. Markus Schmidt examines the present Volksmissionskreis from its roots within the Confessing Church up to the time of the Peaceful Revolution. He analyses the concept of spiritual welfare within the Volksmissionskreis and critically discusses the way in which it was practised.
