The first 'Christian gift' I was ever given was a paperback devotional, Morning and Evening, by C.H. Spurgeon. The first 'Christian gift' I was ever given was a paperback devotional, Morning and Evening, by C.H. Spurgeon. One day, I assume November 7, I read, "Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands." - Isaiah 49:16. It was a wonderful awakening! In that moment I knew that I was not a nameless individual amongst many billions of other Christians. If I pried open God's hand, I would find engraved on both His palms, my name, David Harrison. In my retirement I have taken up writing. Some books are of my own initiative, and other projects have been rewriting Christian classics into everyday English, such as this one, to make them more readable for the present generation. That is what I have attempted here with this classic book of daily devotions. I hope I have done Charles Spurgeon justice. Spurgeon quoted Scripture from the King James Bible. I have chosen to use the New King James Version as it still leaves intact a certain 'poetic romance' to Spurgeon's writings. Where I have deviated from this norm it is so noted. Be encouraged-every morning and evening!
