Hillyer was a 19th century politician and soldier from Connecticut. In 1853 Hillyer moved from East Granby, Connecticut to Hartford, Connecticut. Hillyer served in 1837 as a State Senator from Connecticut's 3rd Senate District. In 1842 Hillyer was serving as a Justice of the Peace in Granby, Connecticut. He latter served as a Union Army General in the American Civil War. He was a leading supporter of the YMCA in Hartford when it was founded in the 1880s.
