Darren Campbell was born and raised in Charleston, SC. He grew up listening to traditional spirituals sung by family members in an old Holiness church that his great grandparents from Edisto Island, SC started. He began thinking about writing a Gullah cookbook ever since he was nineteen living in the Washington DC area. His aunt Debbie prepared a pot of red rice for him to take to his company's Christmas party. Everyone at the party was amazed at the color and taste. Most of them had never heard of or eaten red rice before. They could not figure how she made the rice red. They wanted to know about other Gullah dishes. Many years later Darren decided to write a cookbook about his favorite Southern dishes.
