The conventional induction heating method, used for heat treatment of parts has been customized as a novel method for heat assisted machining of metallic materials. This method is very clean and of low cost compared to laser heating. The method is especially applicable in milling operations with high width of cut, which a single laser can not cover and there is a need of employing multiple lasers. Heating time is very short and only the skin of the work piece is heated and removed during machining. Cutting forces are low due to lower yield strength of the materials at elevated temperature, chatter is damped and surface roughness and tool wear are low. This innovative method if applied to the industry would lead to higher productivity and lower cost of machining.
