1868. Boethius, notable Roman philosopher, statesman, and translator, wrote his famous Consolation of Philosophy behind bars, awaiting sentence for defending an alleged conspirator. Shortly after the work was completed, Boethius was found guilty of the treason charge for which he'd been imprisoned, and was promptly executed.
