Manuel "Barbarroja" Piñero was head if the Cuban Communist Party's "Americas Department" for decades, and in that role he oversaw Cuba's operations in support of liberation struggles in Africa, Latin America and elsewhere. He closely collaborated with Che Guevara on his missions to the Congo and Bolivia but only spoke out publicly in 1997. He died in a car smash in early 1998. Luis Suarez is one of Cuba's most respected academics, widely published in Latin America, Europe and the United States. He is the co-editor of "Tricontinental Rebellion" and author of "Century of Terror in Latin America: A Chronicle of U.S. Crimes against Humanity."
