The present study has been done within the scope of the Treatment of Produced Water: Characterization and new treatment strategies (2009-2014). The production of petroleum resources includes co-producing water called produced water. This water contains oil products and needs to be treated before discharge to sea or re-injection into the reservoir. The objective of this study is to treat the oily produced water (OPW) using the natural polymer, chitosan based on flocculation to achieve maximum processing throughput. The natural polymer (chitin and chitosan) were prepared to adsorb oil droplets from the produced water in the oilfield. Then the physical and chemical characterization of chitin and chitosan are carried out. The results indicated that the chitosan has an ability to adsorb more oil than chitin.
Autorenporträt
Dr. Rasha Hosny is a Reasearcher at the Egyptian Petroleum Research Institute. Her work is related to enhanced oil recovery especially, in the produced water treatment. Her PhD deals with the oil adsorption from produced water. Currently, in her post doctoral dissertation, she tackles problems in the produced water treatment.
