Dr. Helen Sairany is a forty-year-old Kurdish-American living in Atlanta, Georgia, where she serves as the executive vice president of the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians. Well-respected and beloved by family physicians throughout the state, she is recognized for her unwavering dedication to transforming healthcare. Alongside her two adored French bulldogs, Sevay and Jango, she leads a life rich in purpose and passion. At just seven years old, during a tumultuous time in Iraq, Dr. Sairany was saved by a US Marine who exchanged a grenade she was holding for a bag of candy. This pivotal moment marked the start of her extraordinary journey. However, the shadows of her childhood trauma lingered, culminating in a diagnosis of complex PTSD in 2013. Driven by her experiences, Dr. Sairany is committed to creating a world where individuals are trauma-informed, feel psychologically safe, and are valued for their contributions to society. She brings this perspective to her professional life, where she has amassed extensive knowledge and experience in executive and trauma-informed leadership over fifteen years in the field. Dr. Sairany often describes herself as a "nomad." Born in Iraq and raised in the US, she has embarked on countless adventures around the globe. Her travels include trekking in Southeast Asia, summiting Everest Base Camp in Nepal and K2 Base Camp in Pakistan, exploring the W Circuit in Patagonia, visiting Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain in Peru, hiking Pukhansan in South Korea, climbing Ben Lomond in New Zealand, and reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. With over 110 countries visited, she has cultivated a deep appreciation for the rich tapestry of cultures, traditions, and human connections.
