Corruption and illegal drugs can have a corrosive effect on a government's ability to enforce the rule of law as well as its capacity to provide basic services for its constituents. The purpose of this research is to explore the ties between these two problems in China and the possible long term effects. Both issues have been intertwined throughout China's recent history and will impact the country's future. An examination of China's history and culture reveals a continuous pattern, known as the dynastic cycle, which has led to the rise and fall of numerous political orders. The country once again appears to be walking down an all too familiar path which leads towards internal turmoil and strife. The effects of corruption and illicit narcotics play a role in this pattern and indicate that China is possibly moving towards another tumultuous period. Statistical analysis of corruption cases and illegal drug seizures in China revealed distinct patterns that bring into question the efficacy of China's campaigns against both internal scourges. If left unchecked, these problems, coupled with external pressures such as globalization, could push China into a period of instability.
