Richard Wilhelm (1873 - 1930), Pfarrer, Pädagoge und Missionar, Professor für Sinologie, Übersetzer und Herausgeber, hielt sich 1899 - 1921 und 1922 - 24 in China auf. 1924 gründete er in Frankfurt das berühmt gewordene China-Institut und gab zwischen 1910 und 1930 die Quellensammlung 'Religion und Philosophie Chinas' heraus. Seine Übersetzungen chinesischer Klassiker sind legendär, haben sich seit Jahrzehnten als Standard etabliert und wurden ihrerseits in viele Sprachen übertragen.
