John Flavel (c. 1628-1691) nació en una Inglaterra asolada por agitaciones políticas, sociales y religiosas. Dos guerras civiles y un liderazgo inestable enmarcaron el panorama político. Las dificultades económicas y el resurgimiento de la peste angustiaron aún más a la nación. La iglesia también estaba agitada. Flavel, pastor de una de las muchas iglesias independientes perseguidas por el gobierno, fue obligado a abandonar su iglesia en Dartmouth. En secreto y bajo presión, continuó predicando, escribiendo y pastoreando a su rebaño. Sufrió la muerte de tres de sus cuatro esposas y al menos un hijo. Continuó predicando hasta su repentina muerte en 1691.
